Shaker vs Gloss vs Handleless Kitchens: Which Style is Right for You?

Door style is one of the biggest decisions in any kitchen project. Here's a plain-English guide to the most popular styles — what they look like, who they suit, and what to consider before you choose.

Shaker Kitchens

Shaker doors have a characteristic recessed panel framed by a flat border. It's a style that has been around for centuries and shows no signs of going out of fashion — because it works equally well in traditional, contemporary, and everything-in-between settings.

Best for: period homes, farmhouse kitchens, family kitchens, anyone who wants a timeless look that won't date.

Considerations: The recessed panel does collect dust in the grooves, so slightly more work to wipe down than a flat door. Available in a wide range of colours — from classic white and cream through to painted greys, greens, and navy.

At Flat Pack Kitchens: We offer shaker doors across several ranges and finishes. Available in matt finish.

Gloss Kitchens

High-gloss doors have a smooth, reflective surface that bounces light around a room and makes a space feel larger and brighter. They were at their peak popularity in the 2010s and remain a strong choice for contemporary kitchens.

Best for: smaller kitchens that need light and space, modern open-plan layouts, buyers who want a sleek, clean look.

Considerations: Fingerprints and smudges show more readily on gloss surfaces — they wipe off easily, but require more regular attention. Gloss doors also show up small variations in wall alignment more than matt doors, so careful installation matters.

At Flat Pack Kitchens: Our gloss range is available in a selection of colours including white and cream.

Matt Kitchens

Matt doors have become the dominant trend in UK kitchens over the last several years and show no sign of slowing. The soft, non-reflective finish works across a huge range of styles — from contemporary slab doors to more textured finishes — and is notably fingerprint-resistant.

Best for: busy family kitchens, modern and transitional styles, anyone who wants a contemporary look with lower maintenance than gloss.

Considerations: Very dark matt colours (particularly deep navy or black) can show light dust more than lighter colours. Otherwise low-maintenance and hard-wearing.

At Flat Pack Kitchens: Our matt range covers slab, shaker, and J-profile (handleless) doors across a variety of colours.

Handleless / J-Profile Kitchens

Handleless kitchens use an integrated grip — either a routed channel (J-profile) or a push-to-open mechanism — in place of surface-mounted handles. The result is a very clean, uninterrupted run of cabinetry that suits minimalist and contemporary interiors particularly well.

Best for: open-plan kitchens, minimalist or Scandi-influenced interiors, anyone who wants a sleek look without hardware.

Considerations: J-profile doors need careful alignment — if units are not level, the grip channel can look uneven. Not suited to very traditional or period-style interiors. Children can find handleless doors slightly harder to open.

At Flat Pack Kitchens: Our J-profile handleless range is available in both gloss and matt finishes.

Timber Frame Kitchens

Timber frame doors have a solid wood or wood-effect frame with a contrasting panel insert. They bring warmth and natural character that painted or foil-wrapped doors can't replicate.

Best for: country, rustic, Scandi, and organic interior styles. Works well paired with stone or wood worktops.

Considerations: Solid wood doors can be more sensitive to humidity and temperature changes than MDF or foil-wrapped alternatives. Check finish care instructions before ordering.
